Wieliczka Salt Mine and Schindler's Factory Tours

Fifteen kilometres southeast of Kraków is the salt mine at Wieliczka (Kopalnia Soli Wieliczka), a unique phenomenon described by one eighteenth- century visitor as being "as remarkable as the Pyramids and more useful". Today its listed among UNESCOs World Cultural Heritage monuments.

It features a 3.5-km touring route for visitors (less than 1% of the length of the mine's passages) that includes historic statues and mythical figures. The oldest sculptures were carved out of rock salt by miners; more recent figures have been fashioned by contemporary artists. Even the crystals of the chandeliers are made from rock salt that has been dissolved and reconstituted to achieve a clear, glass-like appearance.

It was founded by the Jews in 1937, and since 1938 located in the building at Lipowa 4. In 1939 the new factory owner Oskar Schindler - an industrialist and a member of the Nazi Party - shocked by the mass extermination of the Jewish people, created the famous Schindler's List, which allowed to transport to a new factory in the Sudetenland more than 1,100 people saving their lives.
